Attics in Long Island homes vary according to the type of home you have. If you own a cape you most likely have bedrooms upstairs in the attic. If you own a ranch you might have a big enough attic for living space.

For an attic to be converted to living space it most satisfy three requirements head room, floor structure and access. Head room must have high enough walking space to make it a legitimate living space and the floor structure must be strong enough to support the additional live and dead loads you will add to it. If you already have stairs leading up to your attic Great! If not then finding an area to fit the stairs will be a priority which usually is not a problem.

When converting an attic you are not removing the roof and changing your roof profile. All you are doing is adding living space within your existing building envelope. This could be a great way to add living space and value to your home. It will be less expensive than having a dormer built because it requires less work.
